Paris by Night. Photographs by Brassai.

Paris by Night.

Photographs by Brassai.
Bulfinch, New York, In English, 2001. In United States. Unpaged, 62 black-and-white illustrations, 11x12¾".

"One of the most important and influential photographers of the twentieth century, Brassai (1899-1984) moved to Paris from Hungary in 1924. He is best known for chronicling the city in the 1930s and for his portraits of artists, such as Picasso and Matisse, and writers, including Henry Miller. His fifty-year artistic career also encompassed drawing, sculpture, writing, and filmmaking."-the publisher. While many reissues of classic photography titles lack the attention to detail that made the earlier versions superb, this new edition of Brassai's 1933 Paris By Night seems to have avoided that pitfall. The paper used is a heavy matte stock and the reproductions are excellent duotones. In short, the overall darkness evoked by Brassai's work has been faithfully maintained in this wonderful edition by Bulfinch.
