Max Munn Autrey.
One Photographer's Hollywood.

Photographs by Max Munn Autrey.
University Art Museum, Long Beach, 1989. 64 pp., 47 b&w duotone illustrations,, 9x12".

More than anything else, the Hollywood star making machine depended upon studio photographers to confer the aura of stardom and heroicism upon actors and actresses. Autrey photographed many of the stars, including Tom Mix, Clara Bow, Barbara Stanwyck and Janet Gaynor. In so doing, he helped to create a `Hollywood style' of still photography. Accompanied by essays describing the origins of movie still photography, the Hollywood scene, and changing perceptions of glamor over the decades, this collection of Autrey's photographs demonstrates the development of the movie still into a recognizable genre.
