Forget Me Not.

Introduction by Andreas Bluhm. Text by Geoffrey Batchen.
Princeton Architectural Press, New York, 2004. 160 pp., 80 four-color plates, 7¾x9¼".

This collection catalogues an exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and brings together over eighty mid-19th to mid-20th century pieces from across the globe. Exploring how people transform photographs into objects of personal memory, the book presents the photographs, usually portraits and casual snapshots, surrounded by the apparatus of private commemoration. The photographs, lavishly embellished with painting, embroidery, poetry, hair, flowers, hand-made frames, as well as cigar bands and even a bullet, move beyond the two-dimensional dead space traditionally assigned to photographs to form three dimensional vessels of memory, invested with emotion and private contemplation. These remarkable and curious creations offer a new perspective on the photograph’s relationship to memory and on the history of photography itself.
