Rethinking the Museum and Other Meditations.

Text by Stephen E. Weil.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, DC, 1990. 173 pp., 6¼x9¼".

Stephen E. Weil, deputy director of the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, wrote these 19 essays between 1983 and 1989. He explores several key issues--the way the public experiences museums, the maintenance and upgrading of museum collections, and the training of museum personnel. Weil constantly emphasizes the need for museums to maintain a high level of professionalism while simultaneously making themselves more accessible to the public.
