Dorothea Lange's Ireland.

Photographs by Dorothea Lange. Text by Gerry Mullins. Essay by Daniel Dixon.
Elliott & Clark, Washington DC, 1996. 120 pp., 107 black-and-white illustrations, 10x10".

Lange's reputation was built on her portraits of America's disadvantaged during the Great Depression. But in 1954, she took 2,400 of the most intensive photographs of the Irish people and countryside ever made by a 20th-century artist--one hundred and seven of which appear in this book. It explores the life of the midcentury rural Irish family, revealing the strength and bonds of love which endured in this resilient culture in spite of the many hardships they suffered. A powerful record, showing another side of Dorothea Lange.
